This session will preview a model for developing and implementing systems to support teachers’ implementation of classroom PBIS. Specifically, Dr. Simonsen will discuss critical systems features, describe a decision-making framework to guide implementation of systems features, and share examples of what systems may look like in practice.

Academic skill deficits are related to disruptive behavior in classrooms but are often addressed through parallel systems of tiered support resulting in separate interventions being implemented leaving the causes of both unaddressed. Modifying instructional tasks to match students’ instructional level can decrease off-task behavior. Theoretical and practical approaches to providing integrated classroom support via a consultative model will be reviewed.

Curriculum-based measurement (CBM) created the possibility of assessment-informed instruction which yields one of the largest effect sizes in education. CBM in math, however, has lagged behind reading in research and practice. Recent research in math CBM indicates some key differences in their utility, conventions, and potential for driving decisions in multi-tiered systems of support and response to intervention. This session will detail the why and how-to’s of using mastery measurement CBM in mathematics to drive screening, progress monitoring, and program evaluation decisions in math MTSS. Despite the evidence to support systematic, explicit instruction, it is a method that often gets a bad rap, even being omitted from recent position statements by major educational organizations. In this session, the presenter will dive into some of the key research studies and practical insights behind this instructional approach, demonstrating how clear, interactive, scaffolded teaching can make even the most complex concepts accessible to all learners.

This presentation will be a collaboration among elementary and middle school SWPBIS teams and how they have created both staff and community buy-in to their Tier 1 SWPBIS programs.

The Literacy Toolkit is a training series consisting of a progressive sequence of interactive webinars focused on expanding the instructional interventions used to promote the literacy achievement of students who are deaf or hard of hearing. Presentations in the training series will focus on how to plan and implement instructional interventions based on student learning needs and evidenced-based assessments (norm-referenced, criterion-referenced, and progress monitoring). Instructional delivery “techniques” and implementation “tips and tricks” will be discussed. Additionally, a set of intervention resources, materials, weblinks, and e-learning applications will be assembled for each topic to assist with implementation.
