3A: Profile, Plan, and Put AAC into Practice
Speaker: Kendra Bittner
Session Description:
This training will help speech-language pathologists strengthen the use of augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) by starting with a powerful reminder: every student has the right to communicate. Using the Communication Bill of Rights as our foundation, we’ll explore how to create meaningful communication opportunities throughout the school day so students can express themselves, participate, and connect with others. Using an Activity Planner, SLPs will identify natural classroom routines and instructional moments where AAC can be embedded, develop a Communication Profile to highlight a student’s strengths, and participants will have opportunities to share ideas and planning tools to spark new strategies.
Objectives:
- Explore the principles of the Communication Bill of Rights and their role in creating meaningful communication opportunities for students using AAC.
- Plan for AAC implementation by identifying and embedding communication opportunities within daily classroom routines.
- Develop and apply a communicator profile to support collaboration with educators and related service providers, ensuring consistent AAC use and increased student participation.
