3C: Building Language and Literacy Through Shared Reading: A Science of Reading Approach for AAC Use

Speaker: Beth Poss

Session Description:
Shared reading with rich picture books is an evidence-based practice for increasing vocabulary and supporting language development (Alharbi, et al, 2025) for students with disabilities, including AAC users. Structuring learning around a picture book can go beyond just shared reading, however, with the book becoming an anchor for Science of Reading aligned for alphabet and phonics instruction, targeted vocabulary and comprehension, along with shared and independent writing. This session will explore strategies to use Shared Reading experiences as a jumping-off point for Science of Reading aligned language and literacy instruction. Participants will also learn how tools, including LessonPix’s In a Story and Literacy Toolbox components, can simplify lesson planning and materials prep for busy educators and therapists.
