This session will discuss language assessment needs, including critical information about before-and-after contexts of test responses, in order to best inform treatment decisions.

Research on disorders of learning and behavior typically has emphasized acquisition of adaptive behavior or elimination of problem behavior. For many years, the treatment of problem behavior has incorporated a number of acquisition techniques to establish socially appropriate replacement responses. A proactive strategy — strengthening appropriate behavior for the explicit purpose of preventing problem behavior — is the subject of this presentation. Topics to be covered include identifying risk factors, reducing general risk factors (establishing operations or EOs) for problem behavior, and establishing socially appropriate responses that are adaptive in the presence of EOs.

Dr. Miles explains how she overhauled the fieldwork requirement of the early literacy graduate and undergraduate courses that she teaches and/or oversees in fall 2020 in order to improve preservice teacher training and foundational skills of striving 1st and 2nd graders from historically underserved schools in NYC DOE. Dr. Miles will explain the research and evidence-based early intervention programs and the implementation approach CUNY Reading Corps has used to scale this initiative to 650 preservice teachers and over 1,200 students served last year, and even more ambitious goals set for this academic year.

The Educational Resources for Children with Hearing Loss (ERCHL) committee has partnered with PaTTAN to develop brief informational videos with accompanying resources on the following topics: the need for services for students who are deaf or hard of hearing; teaching strategies; the use of a Section 504 Plan or an IEP; secondary transition and educational interpreters.

Kathleen Lynne Lane is a Roy A Roberts Distinguished Professor in the Department of Special Education at the University of Kansas and Associate Vice Chancellor for Research. Dr. Lane's research interests focus on designing, implementing, and evaluating comprehensive, integrated, three-tiered (Ci3T) models of prevention to (a) prevent the development of learning and behavior challenges and (b) respond to existing instances, with an emphasis on systematic screening. advantages and disadvantages of each to support schools in adopting a behavior screener.
