As an adult with Down syndrome, Megan addresses teaching special students the 'right way' - by teaching them independence, respect, and holding them to high standards. Megan discusses her careers as a fashion model, public speaker, event planner, entrepreneur, and, now, TV celebrity. Kris Bomgaars talks about her journey as a single mother. To better understand and navigate the educational system, Kris became a special ed teacher, herself. She has been instrumental in helping Megan grow up to be independent and follow her dreams.

How can schools ensure multilingual families are truly included in the IEP decision‑making process? In this episode of Language Access in Action, Maria Ronneburger explores the top three mistakes schools make when working with spoken language interpreters during IEP meetings — and, more importantly, how to fix them. While these missteps may seem small, they can significantly affect trust, accuracy, family engagement, and outcomes for students from multilingual, multicultural families. In this video, you’ll learn: - Why an IEP is a process before, during, and after the meeting — and how interpreters play a critical role at every stage - How language and culture are deeply connected, and why effective interpretation requires more than word‑for‑word translation - Why staff training is essential for successful collaboration with interpreters during IEP meetings By making a few intentional shifts, schools can move beyond compliance and build authentic partnerships with families—ensuring every voice is heard.

This session will focus on interconnections between oral language and literacy development across the grades from kindergarten through high school. Topics will include implications for identifying typical development, difference, and disorder using standardized tools followed by curriculum- based language assessment and intervention. Classroom- and curriculum-based approaches for combining general education instruction and special education intervention, with an emphasis on communicating through writing, will be introduced.

This training will provide an overview of built-in accessibility tools, Mac operating system X features, and common productivity tools that can be useful to students with high-incidence disabilities (e.g., dyslexia, learning disabilities). The program will also include discussion and demonstration of third-party tools that are available at low or no-cost to serve the same purposes. Participants will also find the information useful for incorporating Universal Design for Learning (UDL) approaches to their instruction and supports.

This training will lead participants through the Team Initiated Problem-Solving (TIPS) model that will help to make Tier 2 meetings more efficient and your intervention systems more effective. We'll briefly cover the meeting foundations and spend the majority of the time discussing critical components such as precision problem statements, goals, decision rules, solution development, and fidelity.
