When supporting young children and students in their learning with the use of assistive technology, it is critical that switch use is understood, available, and readily implemented. Switch use and its applications need to be encouraged by all members of the student’s support team, including teachers, paraprofessionals, occupational therapists, speech therapists, physical therapists, and all other learning support staff. This workshop will focus on the switches themselves, what is currently available, how they work, how they are used, and how decisions of implementation need to occur, with shared successful strategies of assessment and use. This workshop is truly for those adults who are beginning their journey in AT support, and for all other adults who work with students who need or will need to use switches and assistive technology, especially for augmentative communication, computer access, task participation, and powered mobility. This workshop will contain many examples of real students and their journeys with their use of AT and switch use.

This video will highlight the story of three different teachers that have recently become or have remained passionate about serving students with disabilities. This episode will focus on retention and why these Special Education Teachers chose to stay.

Evidence-based practices for teaching reading in grades K-3 will be presented and demonstrated with classroom videos. These practices are derived from recommendations from the Institute of Education Sciences What Works Clearinghouse practice guide on foundational reading skills, based on a systematic review of the past 20 years of reading research. The videos are part of professional learning communities’ materials developed by the Regional Educational Laboratory Southeast to accompany the guide.

The Literacy Tookit is a training series consisting of a progressive sequence of interactive webinars focused on expanding the instructional interventions used to promote the literacy achievement of students who are deaf or hard of hearing. Presentations in the training series will focus on how to use assessment information primarily from the Qualitative Reading Inventory-5 (QRI-5), as well as other evidenced based assessments (norm-referenced, criterion-referenced, and progress monitoring) to plan and implement instructional interventions. Instructional delivery “techniques” and implementation “tips and tricks” will be discussed, and a set of intervention resources, materials, weblinks, and e-learning applications will be assembled for each topic to assist with implementation.

Extended School Year (ESY) services are special education and related services provided to students with disabilities beyond the regular school year. Federal and state special regulations require that each local education agency (LEA) make available extended school year services to each eligible student whose Individualized Education Program (IEP) team has determined that ESY services are necessary for the child to receive a free appropriate public education (FAPE). This recorded webinar describes the process the IEP team utilizes in making ESY eligibility decisions, including the seven factors that must be considered, reliable data sources, and service delivery models. Timelines and procedures regarding the Armstrong Target Group are discussed.
