This session builds on foundational knowledge of Deaf/Hard of Hearing (D/HH) learners with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) by examining key assessment considerations and evidence-based practices for supporting this unique population. Participants will begin with a brief introduction before exploring research-based practices that support D/HH + ASD learners across educational settings. The presentation will also review commercially available assessment tools commonly used when evaluating students with suspected ASD, while highlighting the potential pitfalls—or “cardinal sins”—that can occur when assessments are not appropriately adapted for D/HH learners. In addition, participants will examine important considerations for conducting meaningful and culturally responsive assessments for students who are D/HH and autistic. The session will conclude with practical resources educators can use to support informed decision-making and effective collaboration with multidisciplinary teams.
