Emotional literacy is a foundational component of social-emotional development and essential for children's success in early learning environments. This training focuses on supporting young children in identifying, understanding, and appropriately expressing emotions, and engaging in problem-solving. Participants will learn how to intentionally teach emotional literacy using practices aligned with the Pyramid Model. The session will cover how to identify developmentally appropriate emotional literacy targets, embed direct instruction into daily routines and interactions, and apply culturally responsive strategies that include family collaboration. This training is designed to ensure participants leave with actionable tools and strategies to promote emotional literacy in their own early childhood settings.

Objectives

Participants will:

  • Participants will describe the critical role of emotional literacy in young children's social-emotional development.
  • Participants will identify core emotional literacy skills and learn how to embed them in daily routines and interactions.
  • Participants will collaborate with other adults (child’s parents, caregivers, childcare providers) to identify how to teach emotional literacy skills to an identified child.
  • Participants will understand the Stages of Learning and evaluate the intentional teaching of emotional literacy skills.
