A popular technology for students who struggle with reading is to have it “read” aloud. However, trying to make decisions about which of the Audio Supported Reading (ASR) systems are best for an individual with a print disability can be difficult. During this webinar, we will look at features of ASR tools through the Feature Match process and review examples of these systems including speech settings, writing tools, study supports, and scanning of print materials. This training will provide an overview of built-in accessibility tools, Mac operating system X features, and common productivity tools that can be useful to students with high-incidence disabilities (e.g., dyslexia, learning disabilities). The program will also include discussion and demonstration of third-party tools that are available at low or no-cost to serve the same purposes. Participants will also find the information useful for incorporating Universal Design for Learning (UDL) approaches to their instruction and supports.

Assessment processes for assistive technology for individuals with disabilities have a common component referred to as feature matching. As a key component of an Assistive Technology Assessment, Feature Matching is often misunderstood, misused, or missed completely in the process of a consumer receiving an unbiased and full scoping AT evaluation. Often consumers are met with AT tool recommendations based upon the knowledge base of their local assessor, rather than the consumer's own full range of abilities and needs to be matched to the features that are available throughout a wide range of products that are available throughout the marketplace. AT and Rehabilitation Technology providers do not always need to know ALL of the products that are available, but they do need to know how to do a proper Feature Match process and how to search for products beyond their immediate toolbox. During this webinar, we will explore these options and receive a full set of feature match charts that are composed to range a wide variety of AT areas.

Students who use AAC benefit from support both at school and at home in order to become proficient communicators. When families and professionals partner to provide this support, they are able to maximize functional communication across environments and identify new potential areas of growth. This session will highlight specific ways to invest, empower, and support team members. Participants will learn about numerous resources and strategies that can be used with families and professionals who have varying levels of AAC experience.

Module 1 provides an overview of the series and materials. POWER:AAC is designed to build the capacity of those who serve students with complex communication needs who require the use of of augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) systems. The materials are appropriate for self-directed or professional learning community use.

Module 10 focuses on the role of parents and the family in their child’s AAC communication success . This module is designed to help school staff support parents and families as they use their child’s AAC system and core vocabulary at home.
