Session 5B - 10 Things You Need to Know About Low-Tech Options for High-Tech AAC Users
Speaker: Beth Poss
Session Description:
While dynamic display voice output devices with robust vocabulary and the ability to compose messages using symbols, text, or spelling afford most individuals using augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) devices the most comprehensive and effective means to communicate, high-tech devices are not always practical, available, or desired. All individuals need to be multi-modal communicators. In this session, we will consider the variety of reasons that individuals using AAC may need low-tech systems and considerations in developing these low-tech alternatives. We will examine text-based, symbol-based, visual, and auditory options that you can use depending on your client’s specific needs. We will also explore tools that can be used to create these systems efficiently and to complement existing high-tech systems.
Objectives:
- List 5 reasons that individuals who use AAC may need a low-tech alternative
- Identify 4 options for access to low-tech AAC systems
- Identify at least 1 tool for creating low-tech communication systems
