Session 3C - Model Like You Mean It

Session Description:
Language modeling is a powerful technique for supporting AAC users in developing communication skills. Just as spoken language learners benefit from rich language exposure, AAC users need consistent modeling within meaningful interactions. However, parents, caregivers, and professionals may feel less confident modeling on an AAC system. This session will highlight the research behind language modeling, its impact on AAC learners, and practical strategies for implementation. Participants will explore strategies and techniques to successfully integrate language modeling on an AAC system into daily routines and support a variety of communicators. Walk away with actionable tools to build confidence and create a language-rich environment for AAC users.

Objectives:

• Discuss three benefits of modeling language on an AAC system
• Identify two components of successful modeling for any individual
• Develop two practical modeling strategies you can implement right away

Speaker bios:
Mark Sauka is a 1998 graduate of Slippery Rock University with a Bachelor of Science in Health Science and a 1999 graduate of California University of Pennsylvania with a Master of Science in Athletic Training. Mark began his career with Tobii Dynavox in May of 2009 and currently serves western Pennsylvania. The best part of Mark's day is when he learns something new, and that happens just about every day working for Tobii Dynavox!

Anastasia (Ana) Martinez is a dedicated SLP and Tobii Dynavox Solutions Consultant with experience working with both children and adults in outpatient, home health, and skilled nursing settings. While skilled in a variety of areas, Ana has a particular passion for working with adults, finding fulfillment in improving their quality of life, and is driven by the belief that everyone deserves a voice.

Dana Ulakovic joined Tobii Dynavox in November 2024 and is the solutions consultant—pediatric for the Philadelphia region. She brings over 12 years of experience working as a representative and clinical trainer for a hearing device manufacturer. Dana graduated with her doctorate of audiology from Ohio State University and received her BA in Communication Science and Disorders from the University of Pittsburgh.

Jared Harnish has had the pleasure of representing Tobii Dynavox in central Pennsylvania since 2015. My goal every day is to help my SLPs obtain the best AAC solution for their clients. The best part of my job is seeing the smiling face of a client and their family when the ability to effectively communicate is restored! 

David Dugan has been with Tobii Dynavox since 2009. David's extensive background in AAC comes from previous positions in Customer Service, Funding, and Tech Support. David received a Bachelor’s Degree from Gannon University.
