Supporting English Learners with IEPs requires educators to consider both disability-related needs and students’ cultural and linguistic backgrounds. This session will explore culturally and linguistically responsive practices for identifying and addressing the unique needs of Multilingual Learners in correctional and residential settings.
Participants will examine strategies to reduce barriers, promote equitable access to special education services, and strengthen instructional supports for English Learners with IEPs. Practical resources and approaches will be shared to help educators better
support student participation, progress, and outcomes.
Objectives:
- Implement culturally and linguistically responsive IEP goals and accommodations that address the needs of English Learners with IEPs.
- Identify strategies for effective collaboration across ESL and special education teams to support English Learners with IEPs and their families.
- Explain the intersection of English language acquisition and special education needs when planning instruction and supports for students.
Target Audience
This learning community is designed for teachers, administrators and related service personnel that provide special education services to students in correctional and residential facilities.
