Children with and without special needs, often engage with or use assistive tools.Professionals and family members need access to a process that makes it easy to move beyond environmental and universal assistive tools. The purpose of this course is to provide specific guidance on making decisions when moving from environmental and universal tools to modified and specialized tools for children, how to use them appropriately within a child’s daily routine, and how to trial and acquire devices in Pennsylvania. The materials in this course focus on practical application within the field for professionals to facilitate the use of assistive tools for children and families. Previously taking Assistive Technology: Using Environmental and Universal Tools in Early Childhood is recommended but not a necessity.
Objectives
Participants will be able to:
- Define modified and specialized assistive tools in the context of supporting children in their natural routines.
- Implement the process of using PEAT’s Suite to determine which assistive tools may support children and families at the higher levels of modified and specialized tools.
- Identify how to apply the use of modified and specialized assistive tools meaningfully within home and classroom environments to support learning in a child’s natural environment.
Target Audience
