This session will focus on the use of instructional strategies to support macro-level writing instruction and the writing process at the secondary level (grades 4-12) for students who struggle with writing skills. Specifically, strategies to help improve the focus, content, organization, and style of student writing will be discussed. Participants who wish to implement a strategy from this session and attend the second session in this series will receive a presentation template. While handwriting, keyboarding, and spelling will be discussed, emphasis will focus on how to explicitly teach sentence analysis and construction using the “Identify-Expand-Combine- and Create” strategy. Other strategies, including the use of grammar building charts and sentence unscrambling, will be presented.

This five-week series focuses on the components of the Writing Rope and the integration of effective writing instruction into content teaching with the combined goals of improving students’ writing ability and content learning.

In this session participants will review the stages of the writing process (Think, Plan, Write, Revise), learn suggestions for teaching writing strategies at each stage of the writing process, learn about the role of syntactic knowledge for writing sentences, and learn instructional suggestions for teaching sentence writing and elaboration.

In this session participants will learn instructional practices for teaching paragraph structure and writing skills, learn the five patterns of organization and related transition words, review the 3 main types of writing (opinion/argument, informational, narrative), learn instructional practices for teaching the structure of these writing types. In this session participants will learn instructional practices for teaching students how to write summaries, learn instructional strategies for writing in response to prompts using text and other types of sources, review how writing can support content learning, reflect on how the instructional strategies throughout the book can be integrated to support a quality, research-based writing curriculum.

This video highlights several high school students who are involved with the State Systemic Improvement Plan (SSIP) to increase graduation rates and decrease dropout rates. They share their challenges and how to overcome them in order graduate. In addition, they note their goals after graduation and a checklist is provided to guide and encourage students to stay on track in order to complete school.

After viewing this video, participants will have information about understanding the Pattern of Strengths and Weaknesses (PSW) method and be able to: -Describe the PSW method and the conceptual similarities among the most widely used PSW approaches -Recognize how PSW models differ and the implications for those differences -Use data from a comprehensive evaluation and PSW analysis to inform SLD identification and intervention -Identify why and how measurement of specific academic skills and measurement of specific cognitive abilities and processes inform intervention in different ways
