Learn to distinguish between the terms phonological awareness and phonemic awareness, explain the role of phonemic awareness in reading and spelling, and consider the unique needs of all learners when planning for and implementing explicit and systematic phonemic awareness instruction in the classroom.

This session will focus on the use of instructional strategies to support core reading at the secondary level (grades 5-10) for students who struggle with reading. Specifically, strategies to help support content engagement through word study and comprehension building will be discussed within the context of an integrated reading-writing approach. Participants who wish to implement a strategy from this session and attend the second session in this series will receive a presentation template.
