Low Vision: Practical Applications of Accessibility Features

This training will cover an in-depth examination of vision settings available across iOS devices. These settings will help all students of iOS devices make their function more efficient. This will expand upon the practices learned with display configuration and incorporate low vision and speech accessibility features. This will include in depth examination of Zoom settings and gestures and blending speech with magnification. It will also include exploring the Magnifier feature as a compliment to existing low vision devices. Participants are encouraged to use their own device to follow along with these practical examples.

This session will provide an overview of the screen reading software, JAWS, with a focus on all the basic features and compatibility options to connect with MAGic, OCR, braille input and output, as well as keyboard shortcuts. Participants will have a hands-on experience to learn the settings and features of JAWS for document development, internet searches, and advanced PDF forms.

Legislation Impacting Secondary Transition

Recent legislation at the federal and state level has greatly impacting secondary transition requirements. During this session, presenters will share the core tenants of recent legislation and policy specific to secondary transition including: Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA, 2004), Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA), Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services Final Rule (CMS Final Rule), Workforce Innovation and Opportunities Act/& Section 511 (WIOA), Act 26 of Pennsylvania, and PA 339 (Comprehensive Guidance Plan). This session will explore the relevancy of this legislation as it pertains to secondary transition planning within the educational setting.

Let’s Get Talking: An AAC Toolkit of Engaging Implementation Ideas and Strategies

This half-day session will provide practical strategies and resources to support effective AAC implementation. Participants will learn through a mix of direct instruction and hands-on activities and will leave with a “toolbox” of resources that can be used to support day-to-day AAC instruction. Topics will include vocabulary selection with a focus on core vocabulary, principles and use of Aided Language Stimulation, and engaging activities for teaching language to AAC learners. Participants will learn a variety of fun, low-cost, and re-usable strategies for engaging AAC users in learning by using age-appropriate manipulatives, games, texts, and apps.

NOREP/PWN: Lessons Learned in the Field

Special education laws and regulations ensure that parents are given opportunities to participate meaningfully in their child’s special education experiences. The NOREP/PWN: Lessons Learned in the Field webinar will provide an opportunity for participants to gain a better understanding of the legal requirements and implications of the NOREP/PWN. Participants will also be provided examples from the perspective of a hearing officer on how legal concerns may arise when there is confusion over the use of a NOREP/PWN.

Getting Ready: Annual PA Alternate System of Assessment (PASA) Updates

The PA Department of Education, Bureau of Special Education (BSE), in partnership with PaTTAN will provide updates regarding the PA Alternate System of Assessment (PASA) based on the regulatory guidance of Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA). PASA eligibility criteria, 1 percent cap, and waiver process will be addressed. New assessment information regarding enrollment, test levels, testing window, test security, and testing administration will be presented.

If the Only Tool We Have Is a Hammer: In Pursuit of Best Practice for Youth With TBI

The session provides updates on national trends for individuals who work with persons with TBI, best practices for providing information to families and professionals, current thinking about TBI as a chronic condition, concussion, cognitive, and social communication aspects, and suggestions for providing support in the classroom and community will be discussed. This session will be discussion based with audience participation expected. Participants are encouraged to share information about clients on their caseload, to actively question, and provide input throughout the session.
