In this highly interactive session will share practical, evidence-based strategies for helping young children with autism and other disabilities engage in richer, more complex play. It will guide participants through hands-on activities, real-world examples, and opportunities to practice using tools that support play. This session will focus on simple, effective techniques that can be used in classrooms, child care settings, and homes to promote engagement, communication, and positive behavior - leaving participants with ideas that can use right away.
Objectives
Participants will be able to:
- Identify key components of complex play and why they are important for young children with ASD and other disabilities.
- List and demonstrate evidence-based strategies they can use to teach and support more advanced play skills across classroom, child care, and home settings.
- Describe practical tools, activities, and techniques to promote engagement, communication, and positive behavior during play.
Target Audience
Infant Toddler and Preschool Early Intervention educators, direct service providers, service coordinators related service providers, family support/home visiting staff, and family members.
