This networking session brings together special educators, related service personnel, and administrators to explore practical strategies for supporting students with disabilities in developing safe, respectful, and age-appropriate social relationships. Participants will engage with foundational content on responding to challenging behaviors as teachable moments, teaching healthy relationships and boundaries, and promoting self-awareness and self-advocacy to maintain safety. Through facilitated breakout discussions, attendees will reflect on how to apply these strategies within their specific roles and educational settings.
Objectives
- Identify practical strategies for responding to challenging behaviors as teachable moments.
- Explain methods for teaching healthy relationships and establishing boundaries for students with disabilities.
- Demonstrate ways to support student self-awareness and self-advocacy to maintain safety.
- Apply learned strategies to participants’ own roles and settings through breakout room discussions and reflection.
