Learn how to use positive attention and establish predictable schedules and routines within routines as preventative classroom-wide practices that are research-based and promoted by the National Center for Pyramid Model Innovations. Participants will self-assess their current use of these practices and further learn how using positive attention, predictable schedules, and routines can decrease challenging behaviors and promote desirable behaviors. Participants will build upon what they are already doing to be more intentional and systematic with their implementation. Participants will leave with action steps that can be implemented immediately in early childhood and intervention settings.
Objectives
Participants will be able to:
- Explain research to support the implementation of positive attention, predictable schedules, and routines in early childhood environments.
- Define what is 5:1 ratio of positive attention, specifically what behaviors of the adults count as a positive interaction and what behaviors do not count as positive while reflecting on one’s own classroom practices.
- Identify what is a predictable schedule, specifically what how to balance the schedule to support developmentally appropriate expectations and reflect on current practices.
- Define what are embedded routines, specifically how breaking down the steps of activities and routines can support children’s independent functioning.
- Examine resources to support implementation and learn how to implement strategies successfully.
- Create an action plan around how to implement practices within early childhood and intervention settings tomorrow or next week with intentionality and fidelity.
