This course is designed to support K–8 educators in integrating data science concepts into their computer science (CS) instruction. Participants will explore foundational data science ideas appropriate for young learners and examine how CS can serve as a powerful vehicle for teaching these concepts.
By aligning instruction with the CS Standards, educators will identify key connections between CS and data science, explore curricular resources, and design learning experiences that bring data science into the classroom.
Objectives
Educators engaged in the course will:
- Identify foundational data science concepts relevant to K–8 students.
- Explain the intersection of computer science and data science, and how CS can be leveraged to teach data science topics by utilizing the CS standards
- List educational resources, tools, and curricula available for teaching data science in K-8 classrooms
- Identify age-appropriate learning activities that introduce data science concepts to young learners.
Target Audience
K-8 educators involved with computer science instruction. Participants do NOT have to be designated CS or STEM teachers.
Reasonable efforts will be made to accommodate individuals who have special needs as addressed by the Americans with Disabilities Act and who need assistance at this event. Contact: Sadie Hetrick, at 717-901-2273, or
