Sign language interpreting is both an art and a science, and this balance is especially crucial in theatrical interpreting, where the artistic elements take center stage. In educational settings, interpreters play a vital role in ensuring that Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing students have full access to school plays, assemblies, and classroom performances. This hands-on workshop will unpack the process of theatrical interpreting in K-12 environments by exploring key topics such as basic theater terminology, techniques for enhancing performance interpretation, strategies for script and text analysis, and navigating music interpretation. Participants will engage in interactive exercises designed to build confidence in their performance skills, develop spatial awareness for effective staging, and learn best practices for collaborating with educators and production teams. By the end of this workshop, participants will be equipped with the tools necessary to create dynamic, engaging, and accessible interpretations that allow Deaf students to fully experience and participate in theatrical performances within their schools.

Objectives

At the end of this training, participants will be able to:

  • Describe theatrical terminology and norms.
  • Identify techniques to enhance performance interpreting in school-based
productions, assemblies, and classroom performances, ensuring accessibility for students.
  • Develop strategies for script/text analysis that align with educational
settings, focusing on age-appropriate language choices, student
    comprehension, and contextual accuracy.
