Questioning Strategies to Increase Students Mathematics Performance

The session will focus on using the power of questioning to engage students, increase their thinking, and facilitate the development of mathematics language, concepts and skills. Specific strategies, including a variety of ways to evaluate questioning practices, how to align curriculum and instruction through pre-planning questions, and formatively assessing studentsĀ“ thinking by targeting common error patterns, misconceptions and over-generalizations will be shared.


Participants will:

  • Make use of various questioning processes
  • Describe the nature and function of questions related to increasing mathematical content knowledge
  • Construct high level, deep thinking questions
  • Self assess questions
  • Describe research in thinking, metacognition, and higher-order cognitive processing

Target Audience

Special education teachers, general education teachers, math teachers grades 3 to high school.

Individuals attending this course must arrive on time and stay the duration of the course in order to receive Act 48 Professional Education hours. Requests for exceptions are to be brought to the attention of the individualĀ“s Superintendent or IU Director prior to the course.
