Service Coordination for Early Intervention Families Considering a Cochlear Implant for their Child

Service Coordinators who work with families who have a child that is deaf or hard of hearing will learn how to best meet the needs of children with cochlear implants. There will be interactive activities and video demonstrations.

Objectives

Participants will be able to:

  1. Identify parts of the ear and its contribution to the hearing system.
  2. Analyze and label an audiogram with normal, mild, moderate, severe and profound degrees of hearing loss.
  3. Understand the difference between conductive, sensorineural, and mixed hearing loss.
  4. Explain the listening challenges of a child with a similar audiogram.
  5. Demonstrate an understanding of the parts of a cochlear implant.
  6. Understand how to make an appropriate referral for a cochlear implant including candidacy, expectations, limitations, and off label use.
  7. Identify three activities of service coordination that will benefit families.
  8. Identify the six components to a Communication Plan.
  9. Write an appropriate IFSP goal for an infant or toddler with a cochlear implant.

Target Audience

This workshop is intended for service coordinators who work with families of children who are deaf or hard of hearing.

Individuals attending this course must arrive on time and stay the duration of the course in order to receive Act 48 Professional Education hours. Requests for exceptions are to be brought to the attention of the individual´s Superintendent or IU Director prior to the course.
