IDEA Refresher: The Basics

This session will provide school staff and others involved in the special education process with knowledge of federal and state regulations regarding the identification and provision of services for students with disabilities. This session will be interactive to provide clarification and opportunity to interact with regulatory information and school-related scenarios.

Objectives

  1. Describe the child find screening and referral obligations of local education agencies (LEAs), and the role they play in identifying students in need of special education and related services.
  2. State the state and federal regulatory requirements governing the evaluation and reevaluation processes, including parental consent, and apply these requirements to school-based situations.
  3. Outline the process of identifying student needs, the IEP team role in developing an IEP, implementing the IEP, and monitoring student progress.
  4. State the forms and timelines required throughout the special education process.

Target Audience

This session is open to a general audience (administrators, teachers, parents, service/agency providers, advocates, etc.)

Individuals attending this course must arrive on time and stay the duration of the course in order to receive Act 48 Professional Education hours. Requests for exceptions are to be brought to the attention of the individual´s Superintendent or IU Director prior to the course.
