This session will outline ethical practices in education, which include professional conduct as a special education supervisor, ethical decision making with staff, and ethical decision making for students with disabilities. A strong emphasis will be placed upon confidentiality and the rules that should be followed by any administrator. The second part of the session will emphasize positive behavior approaches for working with students with disabilities. This includes conducting functional behavior assessments, conducting manifestation determinations, and the use of de-escalation techniques.

Objectives:

  • The participants will gain knowledge related to confidentiality requirements under FERPA and ethical standards for practitioners in education.
  • The participants will describe the procedures associated with a functional behavior assessment and make a connection to positive behavioral plans for students with disabilities.
  • The participants will define the team and process for conducting manifestation determinations.
  • The participants will outline de-escalation techniques they can use in their district.

Target Audience

Special Education Administrators accepted in the Pennsylvania Fellowship Program.

Individuals attending this course must arrive on time and stay the duration of the course in order to receive Act 48 Professional Education hours. Requests for exceptions are to be brought to the attention of the individual´s Superintendent or IU Director prior to the course.
