PaTTAN - CENTRAL Google Maps

Session Dates

Tuesday February 04, 2020 8:30 AM - 4:00 PM - PaTTAN - CENTRAL

Closed
Ninth grade students must reinforce and expand upon fledgling middle school skills and also prepare themselves for increased writing demands in high school. With standards implementation, they are expected to write in all disciplines, and teachers need to assign effective, useful writing assignments both to help students understand the content they study and also to build in students better writing skills.

Participants in this hands-on, interactive workshop first think about inter- and intra-disciplinary writing at the ninth grade level. Then, they look specifically at syntax, general composition, and genre-specific writing as a means of helping students understand two key components of writing: consideration of purpose and audience. They spend particular time with argument writing, considering self-efficacy, motivation, and the writing process, including planning, composition, and editing. They look in particular at how the writing process can develop critical thinking skills and how it can foster better communication and teamwork amongst students.

Objectives:

Participants will be able to

  • compare and contrast middle and high school writing.
  • describe the challenges of struggling high school writers.
  • explain a parts-to-whole approach, focusing on specific, necessary skills.
  • list the components of argument writing, working with scaffolding and differentiation.
