In this presentation the evidence for and against different pathways for language development will be discussed. There will be a review of the evidence of a gestalt language processing style and the questions raised including those around memory. Recommendations for assessment and therapy will be made and the need for parental support. There will be opportunity for writing measurable SMART goals for children with echolalia. The second part of this presentation will address issues specific to AAC including: perception, motor planning, and the role of the communication partner. Recommendations for assessment and therapy will also be made. There will be the opportunity to construct SMART goals for AAC users.
Objectives
At the end of this training, participants will be able to:
- Identify key theoretical challenges associated with Gestalt Language Processing.
- Describe how GLP-specific recommendations impact language input for AAC users.
- Evaluate alternative ways to measure and promote language and grammar in AAC users based on current research.
