Emotional Support Teachers Networking Series
This professional learning community will provide emotional support teachers and classroom team members with research-based practices to support their implementation of academic, behavior and social-emotional learning for all students. Each session will begin with a guest speaker who will introduce participants to books, articles, and/or podcasts that will enhance their understanding and use of proactive strategies to address student social-emotional wellness.
Given the prevalence of trauma in the general population, trauma-informed care (TIC) has come to the forefront of many models of human service delivery. The elevated risks of trauma in special populations, including those with developmental disabilities or those residing in out-of-home care, have also influenced the TIC agenda. As educators are charged with creating environments to meet the needs of a diverse student body, including those who have experienced adverse childhood events (ACEs), increasing school personnel’s knowledge and skills regarding TIC is essential in supporting students with complex histories. Drawing on the TIC and behavior analytic literatures, as well as interviews with children and adolescents who have experienced substantial childhood trauma, Dr. Austin will define the core commitments of TIC through a behavior analytic lens. She will explain the potential benefits of TIC and provide practical guidance on how educators might engage with TIC commitments in their classrooms.
