The purpose of this course is to support teachers as they work to make their computer science courses more inclusive and diverse. It is primarily intended for the secondary computer science teacher, but the strategies and research addressed are applicable for addressing equity and inclusion in any STEM course. The course includes topics such as inclusive recruitment strategies, working with course gatekeepers such as counselors and other teachers, examining your own unconscious bias and cultural misunderstanding, leveraging computer science as a tool for addressing social justice, culturally responsive pedagogy, computer science for neurodiverse learners, intersectionality and its impact on computer science identity, and applying research-based strategies such as pair programming, computer science role models, connecting computer science to students’ lives, and building a growth mindset specific to computer science.
Objectives
Participants will:
- Define equity and social justice as it relates to education, teaching and the K-12 computer science classroom.
- Explain
the racial, ethnic, gender and socio-economic demographics of computer
science programs and their impact on student participation, access and
experience.
- Describe techniques for creating an equitable
computer science classroom through examination of personal identity,
beliefs and unconscious biases, as well as curriculum choices,
messaging, and outreach to parents and students.
- Identify
valuable techniques for leading, participating in, and growing with a
community of practice that fosters self-reflection and courageous
conversations surrounding computer science and its relationship to
culture.
