The CSinPA Drone Professional Learning Program empowers educators to engage in and create computer science (CS) learning experiences using drone technology. This Professional Learning Program is designed to provide equitable learning opportunities as part of a local educational agency’s (LEA) comprehensive plan for CS education. Unlike stand-alone or “one and done” professional development, CSinPA Drone Professional Learning Program supports LEA teams in a cycle of strategic planning, professional learning, and implementation.

Educators build drones from the ground up, earn their pilot wings through the science of flight, and utilize block-based coding to manipulate the drone’s flight. Educators will develop their CS knowledge and skills, design and implement CS learning experiences with drones in their classes, explore ways to expand CS opportunities in their schools and communities, and learn how to remove barriers that specifically impact historically underrepresented populations using evidence-based resources and strategies. Support is provided as the LEAs' implementation of CSinPA Drones continues beyond the professional learning pathway.

Objectives

Participants will:

  • Create, identify, and implement STEM and CS educational materials that are aligned with standards, are inclusive, and are culturally relevant for various learning environments, including in-person, hybrid, and online settings.
  • Recognize and develop a plan to address equity disparities in CS education with a focus on students with disabilities and historically underrepresented groups, such as students of color and females.
  • Articulate the need for CS education and engage a wide range of stakeholders in our communities by showcasing a capstone project and describing real-life applications.
  • Demonstrate foundational CS content knowledge and effective instructional strategies.
