Building Capacity and Promoting Instruction through PASA DLM is a framework for professional development directed by the Bureau of Special Education (BSE) and developed by the PA Training and Technical Assistance Network (PaTTAN) and Dynamic Learning Maps (DLM). The training is designed as a ‘train the trainer model’ intended for Intermediate Unit (IU) Low Incidence Consultants who support IU and Local Educational Agency (LEA) educators.

The purpose of this training is to ensure all educational professionals supporting students with significant cognitive disabilities are providing standards aligned instruction using a comprehensive system of instructional, assessment, and professional development resources. Educational professionals will understand how instruction in accessible content such as reading, writing, mathematics, and science leads to meaningful post-secondary outcomes for students.

Every IU will be responsible for training teachers and administrators of their LEAs using this framework of professional development. The audience will include teachers and administrators responsible for the instruction of students with significant cognitive disabilities, and implementation of the training will span a significant time period. IUs will provide training data to the BSE and PaTTAN using a statewide data collection tool.

Objectives

At the end of this training, participants will:

  • Understand the transition to and value of Dynamic Learning Maps as an instructional resource to support and improve access to standards aligned instruction for students with significant cognitive disabilities.
  • Identify key terminology of DLM.

Target Audience

IU TaC who support students with significant cognitive disabilities and/or who have been identified by IU leadership as points of contact for this training. Reasonable efforts will be made to accommodate individuals who have special needs as addressed by the Americans with Disabilities Act and who need assistance at this event.
