This training is designed to support the successful implementation of the secondary transition process by increasing the knowledge of speech-language pathologists regarding writing communication goals with transition in mind. Participants will discuss elements of communication that are directly associated with participation in the workplace, including both verbal and pragmatic language skills, as well as how communication approaches vary within different work environments. and involvement in post-high-school relationships. They will also examine language-related executive functioning skills, AAC and instructional technology, and the promotion of self-advocacy and independent living skills. This module will utilize a case study approach to look more deeply into these issues.
Objectives:
Participants will be able to:
- Develop three questions to ask a work-site coordinator regarding communication preferences within the workplace
- Research three apps that can be used to support executive functioning skills such as sequencing, memory, and organization
- Identify three communication goals that may be appropriate for students described in case studies to increase effective workplace communication
