This presentation will present the double-edged issue of the intersection of brain injury and opioid misuse: How individuals with brain injury are vulnerable to opioid misuse and how opioid use causes brain injury. Topics to be included: the toxic brain, anoxic damage caused by non-fatal drug overdose, cognitive challenges affecting response to treatment, resources for treatment.

Objectives

At the end of this training, participants will be able to:

  • Describe the vulnerability of individuals with TBI to opioid misuse
  • Explain how non-fatal drug overdose causes brain damage
  • Describe the toxic brain
  • Identify resources to assist adolescents with substance abuse disorder
