This course focuses on structured literacy interventions for students in grades K-6 with reading difficulties. This course is organized around common poor reader profiles that have been identified in research. Poor reader profiles are posited as follows: word recognition difficulties (SWRD), problems that center upon word reading; specific reading comprehension difficulties (SRCD), problems that center upon language comprehension; and mixed reading difficulties (MRD), problems involving both word reading and language comprehension.

The book study sessions focus on the topics in each chapter of the the book, Structured Literacy Interventions: Teaching Students with Reading Difficulties, Grades K-6 . Book study sessions will be led by chapter authors who are experts and well known as researchers but who are also highly skilled at writing for practitioners. Each session will include a thorough presentation of chapter content, a review of application activities, and checks for understanding.
