This session continues to examine research-based, effective practices for Tier 1 reading and writing with a focus on the use of writing to learn. Writing is the highest form of comprehension and plays an intrinsic role in how students learn from and respond to text. During the presentation, critical text extraction skills will be emphasized, and the use of writing for learning and comprehension will be discussed.
Specifically, content will emphasize writing summaries of a text; asking and answering questions about a text; writing notes about a text; and responding analytically to a text in writing through collaborative, inquiry-based projects.
Objectives:
Participants will be able to...
- List a series of steps to take writers from idea to paragraph
- Explain how main idea identification is central to summarizing
- List ways to support inquiry-based learning through question asking and answering strategies
- Identify high-impact notetaking strategies
- Identify how students can respond to text by writing (e.g., writing a personal reaction, writing a report, analyzing and interpreting the text, participating in authentic, writing-to-learn projects)
