This training is designed to support the successful implementation of the secondary transition process by increasing the knowledge of speech-language pathologists regarding legal requirements and best practices regarding secondary transition.
Participants in this course will examine the requirements for secondary transition, based on the IDEA definition and Indicator 13. They will discuss the members of the transition team and identify the transition coordinator at their local educational agency (LEA). The steps of the transition planning process will be introduced, and communication connections made with each component of planning.
Additionally, participants will examine relationships between communication and the role of the SLP, as they apply to the three domains of transition planning: post-secondary/education and training, employment, and independent living/community
Objectives
Participants will be able to:
- Identify three components of secondary transition, as expressed in IDEA 2004
- List the six steps of the secondary transition planning process
- Describe how communication relates to the three domains of secondary transition: post-secondary education/training, employment, and independent living/community participation
