The Power of Disruption: Recognizing and Disrupting Harmful Discourse

Through facilitated dialogue and small, break out groups, this session will help participants: (a) define and operationalize key equity terminology; (b) practice identifying and disrupting harmful discourse and ideologies; (c) utilize the Intersectionality Axis to understand positionality; and (d) utilize personal navigation tools to guide hard conversations. The session will conclude with opportunities for participants to begin to apply their learning to address challenges within their individual and team problem-solving approaches. An interactive reflection guide will also be provided to participants to support their learning.

Objectives

Participants will:

  • Define and operationalize justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion (JEDI)
  • Identify how to recognize and address harmful discourse and ideologies through the Equity Literacy Framework and Learning for Justice’s Speak Up! tool
  • Describe and understand the multiple dimensions of our intersecting identities and how they inform how we see ourselves and those we believe are different than us
  • Identify and learn how to center the lived experiences of historically minoritized individuals
  • Identify and address challenges to individual and team problem-solving approaches by practicing problem-posing with an equity and justice mindset
