For this required event, BrainSTEPS team leaders will learn about BrainSTEPS Program updates for 2021-2022 and will discuss pandemic implications for providing BrainSTEPS consultation and training services. This event will serve to identify ways in which COVID-19 prolonged symptom management in children & teens is similar to concussion management and discuss how to best provide brain injury support services to students referred to BrainSTEPS due to learning issues caused by prolonged COVID-19 symptoms. Additionally, team leaders will learn about the processes that PA's Children's Hospitals have in place for students with acquired brain injury, and will learn how they are both similar and different. Children's Hospital of Philadelphia's education coordinator and Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh's education coordinator (who both also serve as BrainSTEPS team members) will share unique perspectives and insights from their hospital teacher positions. Neurorehabilitation will be defined and neurorehabilitation strategies will be identified for use with BrainSTEPS student referrals.

Objectives

At the end of this training, participants will be able to:

  • Identify how supporting students with covid-19 cognitive long haul symptoms is similar to concussion management.
  • Discuss the difference between neurorehabilitation strategies and academic strategies.
  • List the roles that Children's Hospital teachers across the state play in the rehabilitation of children after acquired brain injury.
