In this session we will review the importance of teaching emotional literacy and effective teaching practices to increase emotional awareness, understanding and naming for young children. Materials, activities and resources will be discussed. Participants will plan for instruction within their own classrooms to support emotional literacy and understand the importance of engaging families in this partnership.

Objectives

Participants will:

  • Describe the importance of teaching Emotional Literacy Skills
  • List strengths and weaknesses in implementation of effective teaching practices to increase emotional literacy in young children
  • Identify and plan at least one set of materials and activities that provide practice with identifying emotions they can use immediately in their work.

Target Audience

Early Intervention and Early Childhood teachers, therapists, paraprofessionals and home visitors.
