There are 5 million English learners attending public schools. Educators must understand the special considerations for the successful development of language and literacy skills among this population of students. This session will feature the key components of first and second language knowledge in addition to modeling a systematic approach for incorporating language skills with literacy development. Cross-linguistic features for language and literacy development will also be modeled and practiced.

Objectives

Participants will be able to:

  • identify native language milestones
  • identify second language acquisition stages
  • describe and analyze case studies and determine the cross-linguistic features that can be incorporated within literacy instruction

Regular Ed. teachers, Special Ed.
