In this workshop MTSS middle school team members will develop the knowledge and skills necessary to improve writing instruction for students in grades 4-12. Instructional practices for tier 1 (whole class) instruction within a multi-tiered system of support will be discussed. Topics include how to schedule time for writing instruction, optimize the relationship between language and the discourse knowledge required for the writing process, explicitly teach students how to respond to text by writing (e.g., note taking, summarizing, question answering), and apply the writing process to discipline-specific writing projects (e.g., narrative, informational, and option/argumentative writing). Developing dynamic writing instruction and student engagement will also be discussed with a focus on the use of inquiry-based activities, collaborative writing opportunities, use of project goal setting, and on-going feedback. As part of this workshop, participants will develop a comprehensive action plan to guide implementation of effective, research-based writing instruction.
