Equitable practices is a cornerstone of a multi-tiered system of support. Research shows that students of varying backgrounds, including race, ethnicity, disability status, gender, sexual orientation, etc., tend to experience disproportionate disciplinary outcomes. The session will provide strategies to mitigate implicit bias, detect disproportionality in data, and methods to engage educational staff in the equity journey. The goal of the session is to empower school psychologists to consider their role as change agents to support ALL students.
Objectives:
Participants will:
- Identify strategies to systematically collect data on academic skills and social/emotional/behavioral functioning from multiple sources to serve as a foundation for driving decision making.
- Identify and enhance their data-based decision making skills through the use of a problem-solving framework.
- Define and develop strategies to match instructional and intervention approaches based upon data at the systems, group, and individual student levels.
