This course describes the research for teaching literacy to English learners. The National Literacy Panel Report of Language-Minority Children and Youth’s five components of literacy will be introduced along with the special considerations necessary for designing effective lessons. The implementation of evidence-based practices will be explored, and examples of effective language and literacy will be modeled. Checklists and rubrics for monitoring student progress will also be included in this course.
Objectives
Participants will be able to:
- List the five components of literacy necessary for instruction among English learners.
- List the national reports and resources for teaching literacy to English learners.
- Describe the effective practices for developing English learners’ language and literacy skills.
- Practice model lessons for language and literacy development among English learners.
- Identify and use progress monitoring tools for English learners’ language and literacy skills.
