In POWER:AAC – Learning the Basics, participants will be guided through POWER: AAC modules 1-6 to learn the skills needed to assess classroom practices, develop AAC systems, select and represent vocabulary, provide supports and scaffolds, and more. Participants will learn to support students with whom they work in their classrooms or caseloads with complex support needs, and who would benefit from augmentative alternative communication (AAC) using core/common vocabulary.
Participants will be able to:
- Identify the differences between “core” and “fringe” vocabulary and when to use each in communication
- Evaluate student's AAC use of a personal or shared system in their environment for independent communication
- State the differences between low-, mid-/lite-, and high-tech AAC
- Describe students’ “core” and “fringe” words used to support daily communication
- Describe the differences between words that are picture producers and non-picture producers within a student's AAC vocabulary
- Identify how to implement a student's “core” vocabulary as daily supports
