This series is an ongoing, interactive, practice based and intermediate level professional learning opportunity. A limited number of participants will be accepted and participation requires a commitment to all learning activities (i.e., webinar attendance and participation, outside peer support contacts and assignments).

In this virtual learning series, participants will review and apply content from the Autism Navigator for Early Intervention: Knowledge and Skills course (AN:K & S). This course outlines the procedures and scope/sequence of skills used in the Early Social Interaction (ESI) model for supporting young children with autism. ESI is an evidence based approach developed by the Florida State University Autism Institute.

During this learning series, participants will review AN: K & S course content with an emphasis on coaching caregivers to support active engagement skills in young children at risk for or with ASD using transactional supports.  Interactive video review and analysis, discussion, exercises and personal reflections will be used to apply content to practice. The Manual of Active Engagement and Transactional Supports fidelity document and progress monitoring worksheet will guide application discussions and activities.

Objectives

Participants will:

  • Identify the three levels of child active engagement and corresponding skills per level
  • Identify the three layers of transactional supports and the methods for embedding these instructional strategies to foster active engagement skills.
  • Identify the connections between child active engagement skills and adult transactional supports to select individualized strategies for supporting child social communication skills.
  • Identify routines based coaching strategies that support caregivers to embed transactional supports in everyday activities and routines
