This training will provide schools who are participating in the AACHIEVE self-assessment project with additional support to develop and implement their action plans. The topics are chosen to highlight key areas within the self-assessment, and to provide additional information, strategies, and resources to strengthen their support of students on the autism spectrum as they prepare for college and career.

Session 1: Systems Change: Identifying Skills for College and Career Readiness will explore the skills that students with autism need to develop during their high school years in order to successfully complete college and find employment. We will look to self-assessments, rating scales, and other transition resources to identify skills for assessment, instruction, and planning. The goal is for the participants to begin to review system level supports in the areas of Establishing and Maintaining Relationships, Social Problem Solving Skills, Self-Awareness and Self-Management.

Session 2: Check In with Jane: Next Steps After the Action Plan will provide the participating schools with an opportunity to work with AACHIEVE consultant, Jane Thierfeld Brown, on their self-assessment action plan in the areas of system planning, disability awareness/disclosure, student engagement with the IEP process, transition preparation, relationships with families and agencies. Dr. Brown will provide resources and strategies related to these areas of the self-assessment and will work with teams to identify next steps in their work.

Session 3: Tips and Tricks for Social Skills Instruction will overview curriculum, strategies and resources to support social skill development for adolescents and young adults with Autism to support their transition into post-school venues. The goal will be for participants to consider these tools in the context of their own LEA and student population needs.

  • Utilize the PA Career Ready Skills resource to identify current strengths and needs in these areas at the LEA level.
