Module 1 supports the learner understanding of why learning to read is so difficult for many students, how reading develops, and what is happening when the reading process does not progress as expected. (Focus: All grades)

Module 2 supports the learner understanding of the phonological processor and its role in learning to read and spell. (Focus: Kindergarten through Second Grade; Remedial Instruction)

Module 3 supports the learner understanding of the orthographic processor and its role in learning to read and spell. (Focus: Kindergarten through Second Grade; Remedial Instruction)

Objectives

Participants will:

Module 1
Attendees will better understand and be able to train others in:

  1. How children learn to read to spell
  2. The elements of instruction that must be taught
  3. The indicators and causes of reading disabilities.

Module 2
Attendees will better understand and be able to train others in:

  1. Responding to phonological and spelling instructional tasks and outcomes from students
  2. Recognize, analyze, and assess phonological influence on children's inventive spelling.

Module 3
Attendees will better understand and be able to train others in:

  1. Identify grapheme units
  2. How print represents speech
  3. Spelling by phoneme-grapheme correspondence
  4. Sort words to find spelling patterns that are determined by the sequence and position of sounds in a word.
