Module 10 addresses the instructional needs of students in grades 3 and up who are inaccurate and/or slow in reading and spelling multisyllabic words. Beginning with phoneme-grapheme mapping, the module goes on to address systematic teaching of syllabication, syllable spelling types, and ending rules. (Focus: Grades Three through Adult)

Objectives

Module 10 Attendees will:

  • Understand and articulate the value of teaching word structure and decoding skills.
  • Map phonemes to graphemes.
  • Identify, categorize, and combine six predictable syllable structures.
  • Review a lesson framework for teaching recognition of big words.
  • Explore word families derived from a common root.
  • Review and role-play a lesson routine for teaching syllabication and morphology.

Target Audience

Teachers of reading and spelling, including literacy consultants, coaches, reading specialists, special education teachers, regular education teachers, and general and special education administrators.

Individuals attending this course must arrive on time and stay the duration of the course in order to receive Act 48 Professional Education hours. Requests for exceptions are to be brought to the attention of the individual´s Superintendent or IU Director prior to the course.


Target Audience

All participants are required to take Module 1 prior to participation in Modules 2 through 12.
