Psychological Counseling as a Related Service will provide local education agencies with the information needed to identify students who are eligible for related services, implement the services, and monitor students' progress in response to the services. This Schoology course will build the capacity of school teams, including school-based mental health providers (school psychologists, school counselors, school social workers), to follow the special education process, from the legal basis through the identification of need, implementation of a continuum of services, and monitoring of continued needs for services for eligible students.
Objectives
Participants will:
- Learn the legal basis for providing counseling as a related service
- Describe how to use Medical Assistance billing to offset the costs of implementing a continuum of counseling services
- Identify evidence-based practices that correspond to the various counseling services defined in IDEA
- Describe how to use assessment data to identify the need for psychological counseling services
- Identify progress monitoring methods for counseling services
