Communication is always a critical need for learners with complex needs. This session will provide many basic strategies for providing receptive communication in order to increase expressive communication. We will also explore how early literacy and early communication are closely related and provide a starting place and practical strategies for providing appropriate literacy instruction.

Participants will be able to:

  • Identify the 7 levels of the earliest communication.
  • Describe how to apply strategies to improve communication instruction for students.
  • Describe how to apply strategies to improve literacy instruction for students.

Special Education Teachers; Teachers who work with students who are blind or visually impaired; Teachers who work with students with hearing loss; Teachers who work with students who are Deaf-Blind; Teachers/other professionals who work with students who have sustained traumatic brain injury; Speech therapists; General Education Teachers; Assistive Technology Specialists; Parents, Guardians, Family Members
